Waltz fragment: Ashes (2nd version)

Christmas festivities have kept me rather busy, so I’ve not had much time to work on music over the past week. Consequently, beyond the halfway mark, most of the instruments in this arrangement are playing exactly the same thing, which makes it rather bland, but the effect is not altogether unpleasant. Regardless, I’m pleased with the overall direction that this piece seems to be going.

It was difficult to find the right instrumental balance, because so much of the original composition was centered around the way that particular chord voicings blended on the piano. It seems that the ensemble version will need to have a very different character, but it is developing its own distinctive charm.

I haven’t recorded anything yet, but I’ve also been exploring some additional stringed instrument parts, and I’m excited about the flavor that they may eventually add.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
