May the Demo be with You

After another month of work, I’m very pleased to announce the release of the May demo. Although my original plan had included the introduction of an item shop, I ultimately decided that it would be better delay the start of that project until next week, so I can have a full month to tune and balance the available items - rather than offering a half-baked version. Instead, I’ve focused on the visuals, sounds, and music.

As noted earlier, I’ve upgraded to a newer version of Godot, which provides subtly better visuals overall. I’ve also made some other technical changes which have allowed many more crystals to appear onscreen at once, and I think this has had a major impact on the overall vibe.

The relative volume levels of the sounds have been adjusted again, and I have have also made some underlying changes to the way my game interfaces with Godot’s slightly-janky audio system. The result is a much more balanced experience - and (I hope) the elimination of the occasional randomly-deafening sound effects which had (in my opinion) plagued recent demos.

There have been some more quality-of-life improvements, such as the ability to use the fullscreen toggle keyboard shortcuts at any time, and the ability to back out of more dialogs with the Esc key.

The most significant changes, however, have been to the music. The main menu introduces a new version of the main theme, with shorter versions of this now accompanying each mission. Over time, I’ll be enhancing these shorter versions, to establish a gradual build-up of musical elements as you play your way through each run.

I’ll start roughing-in the item shop next week. Meanwhile, have a great weekend!
