A Change of Heart

I’ve been running up against the limits of what’s possible with the existing upgrade system, so I’ve spent the better part of this week building something much more robust and flexible. With this being so central to the game’s essence, I’ve been thinking of it as something akin to a heart transplant.

The first step was to build an extensible system for keeping track of player stats, and then to use those stats for computation of gameplay aspects - rather than evaluating the upgrade levels directly. Each upgrade now buffs a particular stat.

I’ve also added internal support for different drone models for you to fly, with each one affecting the stats differently. In this week’s demo, there is no way to switch to a different model, but I’m expecting to make at least a couple more models available next week.

I did some overhauling of the tutorial system, and while there are still a few rough edges, I think it’s working much better than before.
